THE MOUNTAINS ECHO: "ASEND CELEBRATES THE WORLD DAY OF ENGINEERING FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT UNDER THE PATRONAGE OFNEW GENERATION TECHNOLOGIES"
THE MOUNTAIN ECHOED
“THE CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD DAY OF ENGINEERING FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT”
venerable and veritable colaborators |
Fascinating, awesome and fantastic are the words used by the IT-Manager; TERENCE AGBOR MA’NNYO TABI, to describe how he feels about science, information technology and Engineering and its related fields.
Characterized by its euphoria and amidst the ongoing pandemic, the 4th of March 2020 saw the celebration of the first edition of the World day of Engineering for Sustainable development, by the ASSOCIATION OF ENGINEERING AND MEDICAL STUDENTS under the patronage of NEW GENERATION TECHNOLOGIES.
Characterized by so many events, which took place at BILINGUAL GRAMMAR SCHOOL MOLYKO, BUEA, GOVERNMENT HIGH SCHOOL BOKWANGO, BUEA, and COLLEGE ESPOIR, LIMBE; as were the choices of the General Supervisor Engineer BAAR DAVID, who believed that “there is nothing more strongly than getting young people interested in science and engineering for a better tomorrow for all mankind.
Filled with events and presentations, these events began with a welcome address from the school’s representatives; who stressed on the importance of these events, while making them understand that it does not only end at proving in high school that they could get A’s but to take the opportunity to get empowered by this events so their A’s could be useful in engineering and its related fields.
Thereafter was a talk from the IT-Manager; TERENCE AGBOR MA’NNYO TABI, presented the opening talk, elaborating on the goals of the world day of engineering for sustainable development some of which in summary include;
i. To demonstrate the role of engineers and engineering.
ii. To raise the profile of engineering and technology and its role in improving the quality of life worldwide and achieving the UN’s sustainable goals.
iii. To develop solutions to climate change.
iv. To get more youths into engineering especially girls this was one of our primary objectives amongst others.
This opening talk was followed by a symposium by the General Supervisor; Engineer BAAR DAVID, who reechoed the essence of working hard with his most popular citation of said ‘Newton’s 4 law’ and I quote; “our note books will always remain at rest or at constant position unless an external or internal exam is being announced, and the speed of flipping the pages when reading is directly proportional to the quantity of syllabus to be covered”.
He urged us all to “strive for perfection in everything we do, to take the best that exist and make it better. When it does not exist, we design it”.
Of cause wecan not talk about this day without making mention of NEW GENERATION TECHNOLOGIES (NGT), a tech-community which made this day possible. It is worthy of note that NGT and ASEND are partners with an ever growing relationship.
There was a talk from the representative of NGT in person of Engineer MPARA FAITH, who is also a female advocate for girls to join engineering. She believes like Steven Johnson that “the trick to having good ideas is not to sit around in glorious isolation and trying to think big thoughts. The trick is to get more parts on the table”.
This was followed by a brief talk from the SECRETARY GENERAL in person of ACHA GOLDER ANGWE FET-UB, who also doubles as a STEM ambassador and an advocate for women to join engineering; she called on all the young girls to join engineering and its related fields by inspiring them with her story.
This was followed by a talk form FONDONG ZIDANE FET-UB, on how engineers can contribute to achieving the UN’s sustainable development goals.
This was closely followed by a health talk on Healthy Life style to better the profession as engineers by NGONGANG NGANSOP CABREL FHS-UB.
Finally we concluded with the presentation of some real life engineering projects by Engineer NZOMETIA NERVIS FET-UB some of which include:
i. Automated vehicle
ii. Automated house
iii. Robotic arm
iv. Traffic light system
v. Gas detector
vi. Nzobot
The entire events where coordinated by TERENCE AGBOR MA’NNYO TABI FET-UB and OUSMANOU ALAIN FHS-UB.
